A driving game where you steer between lanes and answer exponent math questions to refuel and score points. Controls: arrow keys or WASD to move, space or enter to confirm answers, mouse to click menu buttons.

Teaching Notes for Educators

Exponent Racer turns the entire integer-exponent-rules unit into a driving game - from evaluating a basic power all the way through multiplying and dividing powers, power of a power, negative exponents, and the base/exponent/power vocabulary that ties it together. Students pick exactly which of those six skills to drive through, so the same race can be first exposure or final review depending on who's behind the wheel.

Differentiated by skill and by pace. Before each run, students choose exactly which of the 6 exponent skills to practice, and progress from Street Racing to Maximum Velocity mode as mastery builds. Inside a run, the question timer tightens a little with every correct answer, so the game keeps nudging a student toward faster recall instead of forcing everyone through the same fixed pace.
Spans two grade levels on purpose. Evaluating Powers is grade-6 content (CCSS 6.EE.A.1); the other five skills are grade-8 (CCSS 8.EE.A.1). A student who still needs the basics and a student ready for negative exponents can both find their level on the same skill-select screen.
Rule-based feedback, not just right or wrong. Every missed question is followed by a plain-language explanation of the rule that applies (for example, "A negative exponent flips the base to the denominator"), so a mistake becomes a teaching moment instead of just a lower score.
Vocabulary built in. A dedicated skill has students identify the base, exponent, or power within an expression, reinforcing the academic vocabulary alongside the symbols themselves.
Language-light and ESL-friendly. Gameplay runs on numbers and symbols, not word problems - a student can play, understand their score, and read the answer choices with very little English reading required.
Low-stakes practice. No accounts, no logins, and no permanent record of mistakes. Students can retry as many times as they need without it feeling like a graded test.
Mistake review at the end of every run. The game-over screen lists recently missed questions side-by-side with the correct answer, giving students (and teachers glancing over a shoulder) a quick summary of what to revisit.
Works on any device. On-screen joystick and action-button controls appear automatically on phones and tablets, so it's just as playable on a school Chromebook as it is at home.
